Essential Tips for Driving Safely in Snow and Ice
Driving in snow and ice requires slow, smooth movements—accelerate, brake, and steer gently to avoid skids. Prep your car by clearing snow, checking tires, fluids, and brakes. Use winter tires or chains when needed. Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, water, and a shovel. Drive slowly, increase following distance, and avoid cruise control. Watch for black ice, especially on bridges. If you skid, steer into it and ease off the gas. Don’t pass snowploughs; always tell someone about your travel plans in severe weather.
